How to compare two offers
Use this when you are weighing a current role against a new offer, or two offers against each other. The headline figure is take-home after commute — then effective hourly, so a 45-hour week with a 90-minute journey does not hide behind a bigger gross salary.
- Gross salary and region — PAYE is calculated with the same engine as the UK salary calculator. Scotland uses Scottish bands.
- Hours per week — contracted hours. Annual hours use 52 weeks, matching the hourly calculators.
- Office days, commute time and daily cost — hybrid and remote roles are first-class: set office days to 2 for a 2:3 split, or 0 to ignore travel.
What the calculator shows
- Annual and monthly take-home — after income tax, NI, optional pension and student loan.
- Take-home after commute — net pay minus annual travel cost. This is the lifestyle headline.
- Effective hourly — take-home after commute divided by work hours plus commuting hours.
Frequently asked questions
What is effective hourly pay?
Effective hourly is take-home after commute costs, divided by contracted hours plus commuting time. A higher salary with a long journey can be worth less per hour than a closer role.
How is commute time counted?
We take your one-way minutes, double them for the return trip, then multiply by office days and 52 weeks. Fully remote (0 office days) adds no commute time or cost.
Does this use the same tax engine as the salary calculator?
Yes. Income tax, National Insurance, pension and student loan use the same PAYE helpers as the UK salary calculator for 2026/27. Scotland uses Scottish bands.
Should I include a bonus?
Add recurring or expected bonus under optional pay details. It is taxed as additional income in the same way as the main salary calculator.
